What a comm-ocean! Windlesham School and Nursery ditch plastic in lunches on school trips.

The Wild Coast Sussex Project has been busy all along the Sussex coastline this year, one of their major aims being to provide Wild Beach Training (level 3) for local teachers to support them in taking their classes to the beach. This helps the children build a connection with the ocean and their local coastline, inspiring the next generation of ocean ambassadors.

Windlesham children (years five and six) are often out and about on their school trips, getting to see some amazing different places. Each time an external catering company used to provide lunch of sandwiches, flapjack and sausage rolls, all individually wrapped in recyclable but predominantly single-use packaging.

Pip Martin (she/her) attended Wild Beach Training back in October and is now regularly taking her class out to the local beaches. Being on the beach and seeing the huge amount of litter generated by their school lunches (three big bin bags) clashed with the ethos of Wild Beach and their efforts to clean the beach. After speaking to the Headteacher, a meeting was set up with the catering company to address the issue.

Not only do 240 students no longer have single-use packaging, the catering company have also said they will change their policy across the entire organisation! This will have a multiplier effect across all the schools and organisations supplied by the catering company – that’s A LOT less plastic.

Reconnecting people and their marine environment is at the heart of our Wild Beach ethos. With over 90 miles of coast stretching from Rye Harbour to West Wittering, it’s a wild space for learning with plenty of access. By bringing Wild Beach to schools we can continue to influence positive behaviour change across Sussex.
